About Malibu BeachHundreds of Hollywood celebrities have set up million dollar oceanfront homes in Malibu since the 1930s. Boasting world famous beaches - Surfriders Beach, Zuma Beach, and Leo Carillo Beach – California National Parks, top-notch restaurants and cultural and historical landmarks – you, too, will be drawn to Malibu, California’s rugged beauty. Malibu’s robust terrain encompasses 27 miles of south facing coastline. Experienced surfers flock to Latigo Beach - which offers a natural right hand point break that favors a strong south swell, making long rides abundant. Two more Malibu jewels are Zuma Beach and Surfriders Beach - two of the world’s premier surfing beaches. In the summer, when the waves are down and the water temperature reaches 65 degrees, the water visibility can reach up to an extraordinary 40 feet. This benefits Scuba divers who are then able to experience the full thrill of exploring beneath the Pacific’s naturally occurring kelp forests unimpeded. Children will enjoy the tide pools at Leo Carrillo State Beach, where rangers point out such sea life as sea hares, starfish and fronded sea palms. Look out for the grunions that come ashore at night after the full or new moons. Outdoor enthusiasts will discover a natural playground in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and California State Parks. Hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding and picnicking are all offered in this perfect, humidity free climate. The best hiking trails include Circle X Ranch, Solstice Canyon, Nicolas Flats and Encinal Falls. Tread over to Malibu Lagoon, part of this 169 acre state park, for exceptional bird watching. Migratory models stop to rest here in the spring and fall en route to and from Alaska and Central America. The brackish wetlands are fed by Malibu Creek, which supports a small fishery and ecosystem of tiny creatures that attract these hungry birds. For a cultural break try the J. Paul Getty Museum. Since its extensive renovation, it now houses an extensive permanent selection of ancient Greek and Roman antiquities. Mr. Getty is buried on the grounds and it is rumored that his spirit walks the grounds at night. The Adamson House Museum allows one to venture back into the 1920s with period pottery and an enormous Persian rug designed entirely out of tiles. The Malibu Lagoon Museum, Ramirez Canyon Park (Streisand Homes), Weisman Museum of Art (at Pepperdine University) are all well worth a visit, too. For beach restaurants in Malibu, try Geoffrey's Malibu, Paradise Cove Beach Café, Moonshadows and The Sunset Restaurant and Beach Bar. Great for celebrity spotting! Malibu plays hostess to numerous annual events including: Malibu Arts Festival, Kiwanis Chili Cookoff & Carnival, Malibu Golf Tournament, Malibu 10k Dolphin Run, Lions Club Flea Market and Malibu Film Festival (get dates) which guarantee fun, fitness and a taste of Malibu culture. Whether you come for the hypnotic sunsets, the surfing, the gastronomical delights, or to experience the California dream - you are assured of finding more than your heart can desire. |
